Long February

Hello, everyone. How are you?
This is Rumi from the Shibuya Business Garden.

January is almost over. Well, I hope you still stick to your new year resolution unlike me...
But it's not January I will talk about today, it's February.
Haven't you felt something is very wrong when you first saw the calender of February?
I absolutely have. Because there was no holiday which should have been there...
Actually, we do have a holiday called National Foundation Day in Feb. 11th.
The holiday is known as the day on which the very first emperor Jinmu acceded to throne.
But you know, this year the holiday falls on Saturday.
If a holiday fell on Sunday, the next Monday becomes off, as Happy Monday.
If a holiday fell on Saturday, however, the Happy Monday rule wouldn't be applied!!!!
In addition to that, this year also falls on the leap year which means we have up to Feb. 29th.
All of them above mean that we have 2 more school & working days than usual Feb.

What do you think of this year's longer February?
Of course part of me feel sad but I try to think positive about this year's longer February.

Hope you have a great week!

Shizuoka Oden

Hello, this is Tomoko @Shinjuku Business Garden.

How's your weekend?
I went to Shizuoka prefecture and ate Shizuoka-Oden for the first time.

Have you ever ate Oden?
Oden is a Japanese winter dish made with several ingredients such as eggs, konnyaku, daikon, fish cakes stewed in a dashi.
Since Oden has a regional variety,in Shizuoka, people makes Oden using a dark colored broth flavored with beef stock and soy sause.
Before eating Oden, they sprinkles aonori powder and ground fish powder on it.

Do you know Kuro-hanpen?
Kuro-hanpen is a kind of fish cakes. It's also stewed in Oden. We can eat it only in Shizuoka. Kuro means black .Please look at this picture. This is Kuro-hanpen.
If you have a chance to visit Shuzuoka, how about trying Shizuoka-Oden?

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE 'KOTATSU'

Hello this is masa at Shibuya Business Garden.

Using a kotatsu is a unique way of heating a home in Japan.
It's a low table with an electric heater attached to the underside.

People place it on a quilted mat and cover it with a blanket or
quilt to keep the heat in.

They then put a square board on top of it so that it can be used
as a table.

Many Japanese like kotatsu because they use far less energy than
other heating devices and it's especially relaxing to lie with one's legs
outstretched under the warmth they radiate.

For iPhone beginner ③Search transfer stations and train timetables

Hello, This is Meg at Yotsuya BusinessGarden.

Today’s theme is one of essential applications to search transfer stations and train timetables.
Main appli for iPhone are ‘Eki supatp’ and ‘Norikaeannai’.

I tried both; as a result I chose ‘Eki supatp’.
I have two reasons; the first reason is that it is more convenient for me to check the earlier train or the later train from the search result train.

I usually take a bus and a train, but sometimes bus is delay, so I can’t get the train I had planned.

The second reason is for being able to select three types of walking speed, slow, normal, high speed.
When I am going to be late, I always walk with rapid strides.
It is very useful for me to select a walking speed.
I always be choosing high walk speed.

Inconvenient thing of both is not able to keep the search result.
We can save the route in ‘my course’ pages from the station to get on a train to the station to get off,but we cannot save the time of the search result.

If anybody knows how to keep the search result, please let me know!

Eye drops

Hello, everyone. How are you?
This is Rumi from the Shibuya Business Garden.
You know, what is the biggest annoyance of this season for me is the DRY EYE.
In addition to the winter dry air, using heating system really boost up the torture level for especially those who use soft contact lenses.
The Savior for this problem is EYE DROPS.
We have wide variety of eye drops depending on your needs.
Moisturizer, itchy and red eye solution, fatigued eye remedy , allergic solution, problem solution such as for sty and so on.
Most type of eye drop offer a couple of menthol levels from mild to super spicy.
Personally I LOVE the most spicy type when it comes to eye drops.
It is just like a glass of cold beer to your super thirsty throat
When I lived in the States, I always bought bunch of eye drops whenever I came back home, as I couldn't find any spicy eye drops over there.
And whenever I let someone try my Japanese eye drops, people screamed of the sharp touch for the first time,
but became big fan of strong menthol eye drops eventually.
If you have never tried Japaneses strong eye drops, Just give it a try and I am sure you would love them!
Hope you will have a great week.

Sports in Tokyo : Skating

Hello. This is Tomoko @ Shinjuku Business Garden.

How's your weekend?
Last week,we had snow for the first time this year.
It was too cold....

We rarely have much snow in Tokyo.

If you'd like to go skiing or snowboarding,
you need to go to other prefectures.
But even in Tokyo, we can enjoy skating.

I went to Edogawa Sports Land and enjoyed skating.
Entrance fee was 800yen. Why don't you try it?

See you next week.

This is Maiko Yamada at Yotsuya Business Garden.
Pleased to meet you!

I haven't been introduced of myself.

I have been working here from Jan,2012.
I had been worked at a company relating real estate.

My hobbies are watching movies, reading, yoga, visiting gallery, travelling, and listening to music.

I visited "GOYA" in Ueno the other day. I was impressed by his painting after reading description. There are many descriptions for each painting in Japan, so you can understand it easily if you don't understand paintings.
If you have a time, please visit there!!

Disaster Drill and Volunteer Day

Hello, everyone! How have you been?
This is Rumi from the Shibuya Business Garden.
It has been pretty cold lately. I hope you wouldn't catch a cold.
Do you know what day today is?
In 1995 on the January 17th, The Great Hanshin earthquake, or Kobe earthquake hit the southern part of Hyogo prefecture. It was as big as Mj7.3 and more than 6000 people were killed and great number of buildings as well as houses were destroyed.
It was the biggest disaster in the post world war Ⅱ era at that time.
But amazing things also happened. While government's delayed action was severely criticized, 20 countries from all over the world quickly offered Japan help. And volunteer groups, of which students took a greatly active part, did really helpful job.
In the hope of making those volunteer activities more widely spread, and establishing more stable and efficient countermeasure against disaster, the Japanese Diet set up the January 17th as Disaster Drill and Volunteer Day.
Also 3 days before and after 17th is called Disaster Drill and Volunteer Week.
During the week, many lectures and exhibitions are held national wide to make volunteer activity more active and to pass the knowledge of self-preparation against disasters.
I hope you will have a great week.

Sports in Japan "women's football"

Hello, this is Tomoko @ Shinjuku Business Garden.

How's your weekend?
I went to see futsal game last Sunday since my friend played. I like to see soccer game, but it was my first time to see Futsal. That's so fun.

Some girls were playing futsal on the same pitch.
When I see them, “Nadeshiko Japan” came to my mind. That is not futsal though.
Do you remember women's World Cup victory by Japanese team in 2011?
As you know,Nadeshiko, which is a pink flower,is nickname of the team.
In Japan,it seems that women's football is getting popular after Nadeshiko's achievement.

I heard one big news about women's football last week. Perhaps everyone knows.
Japanese midfielder Sawa won FIFA women's player of the year called Ballon d'Or award. That's amazing !!

Now I'm thinking about trying to play futsal. maybe...

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE 'KAGAMIMOCHI'

Hello this is masa at Shibuya  Business Garden.

Kagamimochi are sets of two round, flat rice cakes,
in which a smaller one is placed on top of a larger one.

Mochi has been considered a sacred food since ancient times because
rice cultivation has always been indispensable for the Japanese.

Kagamimochi are placed in the tokonoma, a sacred alcove and offered at
a Shinto altar.

On the 11th of January kagamimochi are split by hand or hammer,
cooked and served with stewed red beans and sugar.

This event is called kagamibiraki.

Etymology of Yoga

Hello, this is Maiko at Yotsuya Business Garden.
I have started working here from Jan 4th.

Today, I will talk about Yoga which is one of my hobbies.

The name of Yoga is derived from "Yuji" which comes from the Sanskrit.
"Yuji" is a meaning which ties horse's neck with yoke.
"Yoke" is like a stick which connects with horse and carriage.
Using this yoke, people control horses and handled a good command of horse carriage.
If people let horse alone, it will be violent condition, people try to control it by reason.
The tool which connects with these two relationship is Yoke, that is to say, "Yoga".

We have various feelings every day. We feel difficult to control our feelings by ourselves.
Have you noticed that our feelings have been thrown into confusion by ourselves?
It's all up to you, be in good or bad condition.

If we can control various feelings by ourselves, we can be positive feeling any time. So to speak, Yoga is a training of your mind!

As for me, I haven't mastered Yoga mind yet. It's necessary to keep training, training, and training...

Why don't you try Yoga to find yourself?

Coming-of-age Day

Hello, everyone. How are you?
This is Rumi from the Shibuya Business Garden.
How was your weekend?
The second Monday of January which fell on 9th this year is a Japanese holiday called “coming -of-age-day”.
Many local governments hold a ceremony on the particular day to celebrate young women and men,
who turned or will turn 20 during last April 1st to the coming the end of March, on joining the society as grownups.
You must have seen many young women in beautiful kimono and proud parents around them, if you were out somewhere yesterday.
In Japan, 20 years old is the legal age of adulthood. You can officially drink alcohol and vote and even get married without parents' permission. Of course you will get a full social sanction as an adult if you commit a crime though.
The Coming of age day always makes me happy to see young people whose eyes sparkle with excitement!
Hope you will have a great week:)

Yakudoshi

Hi everyone! this is Hitomi @ Shinjuku Business Garden.

Do you know Yakudoshi?
There are the years of calamity.

Japanese believe that people at the ages of yakudoshi are likely to exprience
misfortune or illness.
It is generally believed that men's yakudoshi are ages 22, 41 and 60,
and for women 18, 32and 36.
When reaching yakudoshi, many people go to shinto shrines for yakubarai(how do I say in English?).

My dad is turning 60 this year...
He had a strained back on 31st of December...must be yakudoshi.lol
If you are reaching yakudoshi, be careful of your health and life!

Porridge with seven herbs

 A Happy New Year!
Hello, everyone. How are you? This is Rumi from the Shinjuku Business Garden.
How was your new year's holiday?
I had a very relaxed time at my parents' home.
I know most of you will start working from tomorrow( including of me)
Let's savor rest of our holiday and show up at office with refreshed mind!

Today, I am going to talk about " porridge with seven herbs"( nanakusa-gayu)
Have you heard about porridge with seven herbs?
This porridge is eaten on January 7th in the hope of healthy new year and this tradition could trace back to the Heian era(8th to 12th century)
To be honest, I have never liked this particular porridge. And I strongly believe many people think the same way.
This year however, I will try to cook the porridge for the first time in my life, as I'm sure my stomach needs a break from eating too much during the holiday.

I hope this year will bring you all a lot of happiness!

" A Happy New Year ! "

Hello, I'm Haru at Shinjuku Business Garden.
I look forward to your continued good will in the coming year.

We exchange New Year's cards called the "Nengajo" on New Year's Days.
People send New Year's postcards to their friends, relatives and colleagues to express
their New Year's resolutions as well as to give updates on their lives.
Usually special New Year's lottery postal cards are issued for this purpose.

We usually write the New Year's greetings.
For example,

A Happy New Year!

Wishing you a happy new year!

I wish you a Happy New Year./ With best New Year's wishes.

Happy New Year! May this year will be happy and fruitful.

May the Year 2011 be excellent and totally awesome!

"Nengajo" is very important way of greeting for New Year!
