Seasonal food

Hi, this is Hitomi @ Shinjuku Business Garden。
I introduce Japanese seasonal food today.

"Kuri-Okowa" this is sticky rice with chestnuts.
"Okowa" means hard rice which is made from "Mochi-gome" sticky rice.
It is uniqu in texture like mocchiri.
Chestnut is in season now so "Kuri-Okowa" is the seasonal food in autumn.

Mochi-gome and chestnuts are slightly sweet, so Kuri-Okowa is very popular with women.
Of course I love it.
My mum makes it every autumn and it is homemade taste for me.

Autumn comes, I always remember that my mum's "Kuri-Okowa"

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' ZAZEN '

Hello this is masa at Shibuya Business Garden.

'Zazen' is widely practised in Japan, not only by 'zen' believers,
but also by ordinary people as a form of spiritual training.
It is well worth trying if you have the chance.

'Zen' temples hold regular 'zazen' sessions.
These are usually open to everybody,
and foreign tourists or residents are welcome.

The most important thing in 'zazen' is to breath in plenty of good fresh air
and thereby induce a state of deep meditation.

The easiest method of breathing is the 'shoshuten' method described below.

1. With the eyes half-closed ('hangan') draw in the breath and feel it moving
from the base of the spine up the backbone and over the top of the head,
coming to rest at the point midway between the eyes (miken).

2. Hold the breath and imagine a powerful source of light and warmth,
like the sun, radiating from the 'miken'.

3. Release the breath and feel it flowing down over the center of the face,
throat and chest to the abdomen ('tanden') about an inch below the navel.

4. Repeat.

Restaurants near Yotsuya Busienss Garden ①Japanese style restaurant 'Azusa'

Hello,
This is Meg at Yotsuya Business Garden.

Today, I recommend a nice restaurant for lunch near Yotsuya Business Garden,
as our customers requested us.

I like to eat any foods except very hot foods.
Especially, I love Japanese food most.

I highly recommend Japanese style restaurant ‘Azusa’ behind Mitsui Garden Hotel.
‘Azusa’ is high class and little expensive restaurant for dinner;
they serve high-class fish dishes at night time,
however at lunch time they have reasonable set menu,‘Wappa meshi’ for 1000 yen.

‘Wappa meshi’ is one of Japanese dishes
cooked in special round containers (called wappa) made of thin wooden sheets.
It is rice topped with some vegetables or fishes or meats.

This restaurant served fresh fishes and vegetables.
You can choice scallops, oysters, sea urchin and congers.

Their lunch set has ‘Wappa meshi’, sashimi (slices of raw fish), s
mall dishes for d stewed foods or something, Japanese Miso soup, and Japanese style pickles.

Sashimi is very fresh and so tasty.
Please try it!

More details are here.

Interesting Japanese custom Vol. 21 "The Custom of Drinking Liquor at Work."

Hi, this is Takeuchi from the Shimbashi business garden.

There are many opportunities to drink alcoholic beverages in Japan.
When we go to welcome parties or farewell parties, we generally have alcoholic drinks.
Also, in some jobs, drinking alcohol with customer is part of thier work.

I am working in Shimbashi, which is known in Tokyo as "businessman's town."
So, I often see workers drinking alcoholic beverages after their working hours.
In most cases, going for a drink with the coworkers relieves the stress from work.

If you work together with Japanese, the opportunity to drink alcohol will most probably increase.
Take this as an opportunity to build strong relationship with your coworkers, for this, to the Japanese, is the kind of communication for doing work smoothly.

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' LUNCHTIME Part-2 '

Hello this is masa at Shibuya Business Garden.

In Japan, Some restaurants serve a variety of food;
Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, etc., but most specialize in a particular kind.
You will get special service if you become a regular customer (' joren ')
at a particular restaurant.

If you are in hurry, you can eat standing up at one of the many
' tachigui ' (literally, "standing -eating ") restaurants to be found
in and around stations. These places serve cheap dishes such as
' soba ' and ' udon ' (Japanese noodles), or ' ramen ' (Chinese noodles).

If you cannot read the menu and don't know how to order,
either take the waitress outside and point to one of the plastic food
models, or simply order what someone else is eating.

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' LUNCHTIME Part-1 '

Hello this is masa at Shibuya Business Garden.

Many Japanese people save money by bringing a lunch box
('bento') to work and eating it at their desk.

A 'bento' consists of  rice, pickles, fish ,meat, etc.
packed in a handy box and carried in a bag or wrapped in a cloth.

Many offices and factories have their own dining halls.
These are often self-service, and cheap,
since they are usually subsidised by the company.

People who haven't brought a lunch box and are too busy to leave
their desk can order meals by telephone from local restaurants.
This service is called 'demae' and is very common in Japan.

Housewives use the service too, and the delivery boy or
motorbike is a familiar sight.

Interesting Japanese custom ⑲"The Vocational Schools in Japan"

Hello, this is Takeuchi from the Shimbashi business garden.

There are many vocational schools in Japan.
You can learn various kinds of subjects such as computer, medical treatment, cosmetics, and cooking in these schools.
It is also possible to get qualifications on these specializations.

Nowadays, because of the economic depression, you still have to worry about your job even if you graduated from a good university.
Before, the companies provide seminars and training to their employees.
However, recently, the companies want to hire applicants who already have specializations.
This is why vocational schools are becoming popular today.

A lot of foreign students also go to vocational schools to learn Japanese animation, cooking, etc. Vocational schools have trial lessons for you to decide on which school to enroll in. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to visit them.

Cute Japanese Characters vol.10 Cue-ta

Pipo kun is the Metropolitan Police Department's character which I introduced in my last post, and "Cue-ta" is another hero for the citizen.

He is the character of the Tokyo Fire Department.

The red suit he's in symbolizes courageousness, and his cap is blue which shows water foe extinct the fire.

The number 119 on his chests is the emergency phone number in Japan (fire and ambulance)

His yellow antennas will flash in case of an emergency.

His thumb up pose is telling that you can rely on him in case of an emergency.

The Fire Rescue Task Forces as known as the Hyper rescue Squad belongs to the Tokyo Fire Department. They are now very famous for their splendid works for the 3.11 earthquake in the northern Japan.

They rushed to the Fukushima nuclear plant for spraying water into the power plant to lessen and prevent the nuclear radiation leakage. They really did that for dear their lives!
