Japanese Cute Characters vol.1 Hello Kitty

Japan is full of cute charater marchandise.

I bet you already know the world famous Japanese character "Hello, Kitty".

You can find her almost anywhere in Japan.

Hello Kitty in a panda costume at Yokohama China town.

Photo: taken last year when I visited there.

She is a white little cat with a ribbon on her left ear.

We call her "Kitty-chan". Chan is a suffix to call a little girl or to show your friendliness to the person. All Japanese girls love this white cat.

She was born in 1974 from the Japanese company Sanrio Company Ltd., in Tokyo. It was established in 1960. Well, you know what? Kitty is now 37 yrs old. XD

She is now loved in more than 70 conutries and about 50 thousands of new Kitty marchandise are produced. When I was a little girl, I was crazy about Hello Kitty stuff.

Actually, I am still fond of it...

By the way, did you know that Kitty's full name was "Kitty White"?

I didn't ! I even didn't know she had a family name.

Tokyo New Trend ④ ‘Colony Life ☆ Plus’ Product exhibition

Hello!

This is Meg at Yotsuya Business Garden.

The rainy season has started in Japan.

It is so muggy!

I want the rainy season will be the end early.

Today’s subject is that one of the popular mobile game,

‘Colony Life ☆ Plus’ hold a product exhibition.

I have never tried the mobile games,

so I did not recognize that this event was great value.

It held at the Tokyu Kichi-jyoji Department store.

The event was highly successful; it had a long line,

more than 300 people from the mid night before the beginning day.

The rule of this game is to get the special souvenir in each place,

However in this event, about 30 stores got together in the same place.

It was a really valuable event for game funs.

One of Japanese sweets store in Toyama prefecture, ‘In

kokogetsu-do’ is very popular,

especially ‘the Japanese cake set including the collaborated item bear,

which is a main character of ‘Colony Life ☆ Plus’.

I did not go to this event, but I found my favorites ,

for example Japanese food , karasumi, sea urchin,

and chicken liver patties in their website.

I would like to go to this event next year.

Japan Expo in France

Japanese subculture such as "Anime" and "Manga" are now worldwide movement.

From June 30th till July 3rd, in Paris France, there will be the largest exhibition of Japanese culture and entertainment in Europe, called "Japan Expo".

That was started by some French youngsters loving Japanese subculture 10 years ago, and it has been the largest exhibition of Japanese pop culture since 1997.

More than 160,000 people visit there each year!!!

They introduce various Japanese culture like J-pop music, Cosplay, Budo (Japanese martial arts), and TV Games. Also you can try Japanese food such as Sushi, Tako yaki and ramen.

I'm impressed to know how people in France have interests in Japan and Japanese culture!

Tokyo New Trend ③ ‘Tokyo Sky Tree’

Hello,

I am Meg from Yotsuya Business Garden.

Today’s theme is Tokyo Sky Tree.

Recently, it was announced that Tokyo Sky Tree would start on May 22nd 2012 and the entrance fee of Tokyo Sky Tree observation deck was￥3,000.

Many people are looking forward to going to go up to this tower, but I think it is expensive.

According to the questionnaire result of Nikkan Sports,

78 percent of people felt that it was expensive, however ,

68 percent of those answered that they would like to go up to the observation deck.

In my case, I would not like to go in 2012, I will go there in 2013　after it will not be crowded.

In Japan there are some commercial films of Tokyo Sky Tree, for example, the canned coffee BOSS, energy drink with Vitamin, Oronamin C, etc.

Tokyo Sky Tree is one of symbols of Japan's recovery from the disaster .

It is like Tokyo tower is a symbol of Japan's recovery from the World War II.

I pray our hope will enlarge in 2013!

School Sports Day in Japan

Hello, how are you doing? I'm Haru at Shinjuku Business Garden.

It's cloudy day Shinjuku today.

I'd like to write about School Sports Day in Japan.

There is a school event called Sports Day in Japan.

It is held at all schools from kindergarten to high school, and all students are obliged to take part.

There are various events, including a sprint race, a relay race, a three-legged race, team work gymnastics,

ball games, a mock cavalry battle, and a tug of war, and each student participates in some of these events.

It once used to be held in the fall, but these days many schools hold sports days in May or June,

soon after the new term begins, because it promotes friendship among new school and classmates.

On the day, students' family members sit around the school ground and whenever their children appear

in events parents start taking pictures or videos of them.

The following picture is at my daughter's high school's sport day.

They are cheering group for yellow team.

There are a lot of schools where the event controlled voluntarily is held according to schedule after the earthquake.

They are enjoying the sports day with big smile.

"Pachinko"　is a kind of pinball machine.
It is one of the surprises for a foreigner who visits Japan for the first time.
You can find pachinko parlor wherever you go all over Japan, and it is crowded with a lot of customers inside.

It might be illegal or not so popular in a foreign country.
But, in Japan it is legal and divided into the category of game or leisure.

The pachinko market is estimated at 29 trillion yen, and is one of the leisure which Japanese love very much.
Because the trader is improving new machines day after day, so people become addicted to playing it.

I have experienced playing it once. But I didn't feel happy because I have used 1000yen at once.

Popular meeting place "Moyai" in Shibuya

Hi, this is Business Garden!

In the South exit of Shibuya station, there is a popular meeting place with a statue called "Moyai".

The statue resembles Moai statues of Easter Island, and it was given to Shibuya by the people of Niijima Island in 1980.

The statue consist of　"抗火石”, local products of Niijima Island.

In the beginning, the name "Moyai" get the hint from Moai statue.

In addition to that, "Moyai" means "work together" in the local dialect.

There are less people than in front of Hachi-kou mae, so it is a better place for meeting.

Yotsuya "SUGA Shrine" a annual large festival!

Hi,  We are in the middle of rainy season in Japan. It's been raiying a lot :(  we miss sunshine!  Yotsuya Business Garden is only 5 minitues walk from Yotsuya station. "SUGA Shrine",the tutelary of Yotsuya area, will take place a annual large festival  from June 3rd to 5th.  This festival used to be one of the five biggest festivals in Edo period. I will start a new theme about Tokyo New Trend, I would like to introduce　you　to energetic Tokyo fashion, people, new shopping spots, and so on.

Today’s subject is ‘Shibuya 109’,

The Shibuya 109 is a famous fashion shopping centre in the very fashionable Shibuya region of Tokyo.

It is very popular among young girls, however I have never bought anything when I was young.

Shibuya 109 is also famous as a meeting spot.

By the way, the building is owned by Tokyu and this is where the building derives its name from as 109 in Japanese is pronounced "to kyu", thus "Shibuya Tokyu".

Tokyu have operations in 6 shopping centers named 109, for example, ‘SHIZUOKA 109’,

‘109 MACHIDA’.

I was really surprised to hear that new 109 opened at Abeno in Osaka prefecture last month and this name is ‘Shibuya109 Abeno’

Abeno is not Tokyo Shibuya, but it is named ‘Shibuya109 Abeno’

I think that ‘Shibuya’ is one of fashion blands!

Shibuya has regained vitality at all day and night already!
