LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' TEISHOKUYA '

Hello this is masa at Shibuya Business Garden.

Many Japanese restaurants offer low-priced set meals('teishoku')
at lunchtime, which is usually from noon to 1 p.m. for office workers;
and the more popular places soon fill up with people taking advantage of this.

A Japanese set meal consists of a main dish such as grilled fish,
a bowl of rice, a bowl of 'miso soup', and a small dish of pickles.

Some cheap restaurants called 'teishoiuya' sell these items separately,
so you can make up your own combination.
Sometimes you serve yourself,
and sometimes youbuy tickets and give them to the waitress
when she takes your order.
These restaurants are popular among students.

Some restaurants serve a variety of food;
Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, etc., but most specialize in
a particular kind. You will get special service if you become a
regular customer ('joren') at a particular restaurant.

Cool Japan ⑥Shower toilet!

Hello.
This is Meg at YotsuyaBusinessGarden.
Today’s theme is shower toilet!

It is essential thing for us Japanese, it is unknown by the overseas people.
When I explained it to Italian college girl at New York 2 years ago,
she could not understand merits of this product.
I think she could understand if she used it.

In Japan shower toilet has been in widespread use.
On the other hand, in other countries it has not used because of lack of sockets in bathroom.
In Japan, the adoption rate is nearly 70%.

The first developer of shower toilet, TOTO made huge efforts to develop it.
It is one of Cool Japan, because seeking comfort, and paying attention to details.
However we have a problem that shower toilet has so many buttons, we can't memorize them.
For example, one model of TOTO has 38 buttons.

Now, shower toilet is very popular in rich people in China, and movie stars in US.
I would like to tell shower toilet to the acquaintance who have lived in the other countries!

Interesting Japanese custom⑱"100-yen shop"

Hello, this is Takeuchi from the Shimbashi business garden.

Compared with other countries, there are many 100-yen shops in Japan.
We can buy various kinds of items at a low price in a 100-yen shop.
It is not only cheap but there are also many items assembled there.

I think that everyone wants an item as cheap as possible.
Furthermore, if we find items in other stores which are sold at a higher price, we feel the fun when we can buy it only for 100 yen.

That's why 100-yen shop is very popular in Japan.
If you have a chance to come to Japan, please visit this kind of store.
I surely think that you can feel the fun.

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' DRINKING '

Hello this is masa from Shibuya Business Garden.

Japan is full of drinking places ( 'nomiya' ).
Alll kinds of alcohol are available, but the most popular are 'sake',
'shochu' (a spirit distilled from grain, sweet potatoes, etc.), beer and whisky.

The average company worker goes drinking at economically-priced beer halls,
'izakaya'. The Japanese like to take their dinner as a succession of snacks while
drinking, often ending up with a rice dish such as 'ochazuke' (a kind of rice soup).

The Japanese like to drink in groups.
It is bad form to start drinking as soon as your glass is filled.
When everyone is ready, everybody shouts 'kanpai' ("bottoms up")
and starts swinging.

That will help cement relationships and make them
feel you are more like "one of them".

Beautiful Japanese

Hi!

Today, I watched on TV about Japanese pollution.

Younger people says "Samu!", "Atu!", "Haya!","Uza!" and so on...

It is overleap "i".

And they don't wonder it.

When I was a child, my grandmother spoked in a gentle tone of voice, and I liked the way her speaks.

It is time to stop and look at what we use correct language for leaving behind a legacy of beautiful Japanese.

Cool Japan ⑤ UNIQLO

Hello, this is Meg in Yotsuya Business Garden.
Today’s subject is UNIQLO; it is the global clothing retailer.
I love to wear UNIQLO fleecy sweater in winter to save heating cost.

This year UNIQLO business is not so strong,
Domestic sales register year-on-year losses for the first time in 8 years,
However they have a powerful new store development strategy.

In September16 2011, UNIQLO shop reopened in Tobu department store.
500 people lined up in front of the store! It became a biggest store in Tokyo.

Furthermore at New York, UNIQLO will open two largest flagship shops in October.
One is "UNIQLO New York Fifth Avenue," on Friday, October 14th, and "UNIQLO New York 34th Street," on Friday, October 21.

When UNIQLO shop opened in Paris in 2009, French columnist Mr. Regis Arnaud is introduced it as "UNIQLO shock".
He gave the highest praise to UNIQL as an only global living ware bland except Western companies.

Now, How would they succeed in New York shops?
I think UNIQLO will be successful because their price and quality are very good!

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' BETTING '

Hello this is Shibuya Business Garden.

Gambling is illegal in Japan unless it is sponsored by the Government.

However, there is plenty of scope for those who like an occasional flutter,
since the Government-backed betting operations cover horse racing,
speedboat racing, motorbike racing and bicycle racing ( in order of popularity),
and public lotteries.

Horse racing is the biggest form of betting in Japan.
There are central race courses in the big cities as well as many local race courses.

There are many self-appointed experts who predict the winners and sell
the information at race courses and bettig offices.

Interesting Japanese custom⑰ "Changing Rooms"

Hello, this is Takeuchi from the Shimbashi business garden.

When you rent a room in Japan, you need to return the room in the original state before moving out.
Because furniture is always placed in the room in other countries, foreigners say this custom is very troublesome.

Certainly, it is very convenient If furniture is placed in the room.
However, it may become an inconvenience, since it cannot replace freely.
Therefore, most of the people think it's good that the room is returned to its original state when moving out.

If you don't want to take the furniture out with you, it is possible to sell to the recycling shops.
The bulky waste center is also available for contact.
If you apply for it, they can take them away although it costs a fee.

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' STUDYING JAPANESE '

Hello this is masa at Shibuya Business Garden.

Japan is a very interesting language, and more and more
people are studying it these days. The number of Japanese language
schools at home and abroad is increasing steadily.

A good way to start familiarizing yourself with the Japanese writing system
is to study shop signs, street signs and other signboards.

Station signs are helpful, because they are often written in ' kanji '
( Chinese characters, extensively used in Japanese ),
' hiragana '  ( one of the two Japanese syllabaries, the other being
' katakana ' ), and the Roman alphabet.

If you don't learn Japanese, you will be missing a lot !

Interesting Japanese custom⑯ "Japanese eat meals alone?"

Foreigners have the impression Japanese often eat meals alone.
Koreans often ask us this question.

I heard that in Korea, if a person eat meals alone, somebody would ask "Why are you eating alone?" "Don't you have a friend?"
That's why maybe Koreans doesn't like to eat meals alone.

I think Japanese also prefer to eat meals with friends or family together.
However, it cannot be helped when we are very busy and have no time.
We feel comfortable eating alone rather than inviting another person because we don't have a common time.

Japan is a very busy society.
So, people usually eat alone but Japanese people also make time to eat with friends and family from time to time.

LIVING JAPANESE STYLE ' TOFU '

Tofu is healthy food made from soybeans, which have been dubbed
'meat in vegetable form' because of their high protein content.

The simplest way of eating tofu is in the form of  'hiyayakko'.
This dish also allows you to appreciate the true taste of tofu.
To prepare it, chill a block of tofu and prepare some
'yakumi' (condiments) such as grated ginger ( 'oroshi shoga')
and  chopped chives ('asatsuki').

A RECIPE FOR ' AGEDASHI-DOFU ' (fried 'tofu')

1.  Cut a block of  'tofu' in two and cover it in a thick layer of flour.

2.  Fly it in oil at 160-170℃ until it turns golden brown.

3. Usually eaten in katsuo-bushi soup.

Please try it!
