Trial lesson: SAORI (free style of hand-weaving)

Hi, everyone!

I experienced a free style of hand-weaving, SAORI,  for the very first time.
Well, I was deeply attracted to its philosophy and high creativity.

Misao Jo is the founder of SAORI in 1968. (She is now over 100 years old!!)
She says humans are not like machines, there is no right or wrong or mistakes in SAORI philosophy.
Each weave has its own special character.

You can freely weave what you want.

You can see the yarns of gradation colors on the shelf.

Can't decide which color to choose?
Well, let your mood pick the colors you want!

Here is the SAORI hand-weaving Loom.

As a beginner of the experience course which I took, some process are prepared beforehand such as putting a warp on a loom to be able to weave.

I guess that is the difficult and time-taking part of hand weaving.

I picked lemon yellow, light green, and white cotton yearn.

You need to wind the yarn on the plastic rods like this.

Then set the rods to the wooden object which looks like a canoe.
( I don't even know what this object is called in Japanese.)

Pass through the "canoe looking object" in between the warp and move the legs alternately on the steps of the weaving loom.

Well, it is difficult to tell the whole process of weaving because I am not familiar with the whole thing about hand-weaving.

When finish weaving, put the completed work on the scales.
The price of the yarn is determined by weight and what material the yarn is made of.

They have regular class that you can visit and use the Loom as many times as you want by joining the membership of the SAORI.

It was fun experience for me.
I will think about joining the membership!

Thank you for reading today.

Have a nice week!
